Driving toward the Sally Gap we encounter a beautiful lake called Lough Tay. Situated on the 6,000 acre estate of Luggala which is owned by the Guinness Family. The lake is said to resemble a pint of Guinness because of its dark peaty waters and the imported white sandy beach on the shore at the entrance to Luggala Estate. Hence it is often referred to as “The Guinness Lake”.
The Estate, the Castle and its smaller lodges are available to rent and have been host to many famous personalities including Michael Jackson and Mel Gibson.
The dark colour of the lake is created as the local rainwater filters through the peat of the surrounding Blanket Bog. The water of the streams feeding the lake turns a brownish colour which in the depths of the lake appears black. Luggala Estate and the surrounding mountains are a popular film location and have featured in many famous films and tv dramas. These include ‘Camelot ‘, ‘Excalibur’, ‘King Arthur’, ‘Braveheart’, ‘The Tudors’ and ‘The Vikings’ and many more.
