About Wicklow.

The capital town of Wicklow derives it’s name from an old Norse name ‘Wyknlo’. The entire upland area is designated as a special area of conservation and as a Special Protection Area under EU law. The Wicklow Mountains National Park was established in 1991 to conserve the local biodiversity and  landscape. The  ‘Wicklow  Way’  is the oldest waymarked long  distance walking trail in Ireland and is 129 kilometres long.  It runs from Marley Park in the southern suburbs of Dublin, through the Wicklow mountains and  finishes  in the county  Carlow village of Clonegal. The upland region was formed during the ice age  and  has many lakes set in valleys or glacial ‘corries’. Wicklow featured in much of Ireland’s history especially during the rebellion of 1798  where the clans  of O’Byrnes and O’Tooles fought many  skirmishes  against the occupying British Army. This led  to the construction of the Military Road by the British Army through the Wicklow Mountains. The road  is 58 kilometres long  and  had  four Army Barracks built along  its route. By choosing ‘Tour Wicklow’, County Wicklow can be  enjoyed for it’s landscaped and  wild beauty, it’s history  and  heritage and  especially it’s mountains and lakes that will leave all visitors in awe of it’s beauty.
